F is for Fiuggi, Italy. The Golden Age of Travel Posters

Tito Corbella (1885-1966)  Dover Press
Fiuggi, Italy, is a classic medieval hill town, not far from Rome.  If you would like to "take to the waters," as many have done going back to the ancient Romans and before, this is the place.  The mineral baths are said to be relaxing, bestowing many health benefits, besides being in a wonderful area with friendly people, terrific food, and interesting architecture.

Fiuggi is known for its drinkable mineral water which as far back as the reign of Pope Boniface VIII (8th C.) has been the water of choice to dissolve and remove kidney stones. Pope Boniface ordered this water 190 times during his reign.  (Oh those Vatican record keepers).  And even Michelangelo was reported to have said after visiting the spa (16th C.), that kidney stones were, "The only stones I did not love."

The artist, Tito Corbella, was known as an exceptional portrait painter and Art Deco commercial artist, also created Italian military propaganda posters during World War I.  Posters are commissioned for many reasons.  If you click on the poster, you can get a closer look.  This works for all of them.

I've added a  link to more information and photographs of Fiuggi.  And should you wish to try Fiuggi mineral water, both sparkling and still (no gaza),   it is for sale on Amazon for $6 a bottle.

  2. Thank you, Damyanti. So true, and not just Rome and Venice.

  3. I love these poster images. So much color. Very clever A-Z theme. I like old labels too, Dover has a book full of them. They weren't just product labels then they were art, unlike now.

    1. Dover Press is terrific and helpful, having to be so careful with the intellectual property facet of blogging.

  5. Me too. Sitting at a sidewalk cafe sipping an espresso and speaking fluent Italian to someone who stopped to talk with me. Isn't fantasy wonderful -- the fluent Italian part?

  7. How many hot spring mineral baths are in your area Lynn? We actually have quite a few here in Colorado, all over the state. I have been to two.

  8. That's quite interesting about the water. I've been to Italy, but only to Pisa, Fiuggi is a place I'm hearing about for the first time.

    Have fun with a-z.

  10. Interesting information! I would love to visit Italy and this sounds like a great place to go. We are going to visit a place in Washington called Soap Lake that also has mineral water though I don't think it's drinkable.

  11. I have never heard of Soap Lake. But mineral baths are soothing and relaxing. Not all of the water is safe to drink. We have one well-known springs here Colorado, in Glenwood, Springs where you can take the AmTrak from Denver to that small town. Would be a great weekend trip after our very cold Winter here in Colorado.
