An Ode to My Right Knee

This Ode seems appropriate as I recently had a partial knee replacement and wanted to write something witty and clever about the knee, but found this on the Internet instead.  Rita Dove who was our Poet Laureate from 1993-1995 wrote this perfect ode. An Ode to My Right Knee. VQR online

Hard to blog after surgery, but Thanksgiving seems so appropriate to be thankful for the wonderful surgeon and support staff at Kaiser, here in Colorado and my wonderful family, especially my sister who came here to cook for my hubby and drive him to the hospital and generally oversee the first few days of my stay at the hospital.  Our neighbors came over with full course dinners.  We are so lucky and grateful. My son Bret and his wife will bring over Thanksgiving dinner and we will be together that day.

I had a partial knee replacement which is less stressful than a full knee replacement, but not "a walk in the park."  My goal, among others, is to dance at my grandsons' weddings, and two being pre-teens and the other two boys are in high school, so there is a gap of years to practice.  I still have some living to do, and with God's grace, I will.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving in whatever form it takes all over the world and savor the small moments.

  1. Replacements are not fun. Hubby has two hips and a knee, I just have a hip. However, I don't think you will have any trouble dancing much sooner than the wedding dates, unspecified. Missed you.

  2. Thank you, Jo! We are lucky we are given more productive years with the magic of replacement parts, less pain too. And every year there is something new and improved. One thing that was interesting to me was a strip of colloidal silver tape which was used to to cover the incision which apparently kills bacteria. Colloidal silver was what the Romans used for their wounds in battle, I found out.

    1. That's interesting. Amazing what they knew in those days.

  3. Hi Natasha. I'm pleased that the op went well for you and I wish you a speedy recovery. People can be amazingly generous, as you have found. Our family has been on the receiving end of such kindness in the past.
By the way; I'm not certain but I think that Thanksgiving is strictly USA and not celebrated all over the world. We have our turkey at Christmas!

    1. I did know that but isn't there another holiday around that time? When I was a student teacher at Winchester and we American students were there for our Thanksgiving, King Alfred's College gave us a Thanksgiving dinner completer with Turkey but bread gravy instead. We felt so honored since it was the Pilgrims celebration of their departure for the New World from England.

  4. Hi Tasha - so pleased all is fixed and you're on the road to recovery .. I knew about the colloidal silver - extraordinary what the Romans knew or acquired from the Greeks or earlier ...

Good to see everyone toddled around and helped .. bringing you sustenance and company .. and then Thanksgiving .. sounds as though it will be fun ... and to know you'll be up and running by Christmas ... near enough!

So happy for you .. I'd wondered what was happening ... cheers Hilary

  7. I'm glad the surgery is over and also that you liked that quote. I love those kids and I really need to get going on working on my cooking. Hubby is making gumbo today. I think it is for the Christmas gumbos he gives away to a few friends, but also to us. It takes all day and he is looking tired. I will go and wash dishes now, because that is something I can do. I hope you will feel better soon. It sounds like you have so much support and help, which is great. Take care.
